Ahoy!

This is my second pirate ship. The first was much more . . . bad. I've learned a lot with this one so the next will be even better.

The first thing I learned was that the waves need to go the other direction.

Second, that chocolate is a great medium to work with.

Third, my piping skills need a little work.

And last, my sculpting skills need never be employed again.

Engelbreit Again

This month many of you have or will be attending a Relief Society birthday dinner. For ours, they are not having everyone make just any cake, they are giving us a recipe to make a very non-decoratable cake. For the record, I do not like being given a recipe. It's a little insulting.

Anyhow, Liz's ward is being much more traditional and accomodating to the creative, so I made hers.

She has this really great cake stand from Mary Engelbreit and wanted a cake to match.

I wanted really bright flowers on top so . . . here they are!

I have now made a 3 tier cake, a 2 tier cake, and a single tier cake all in 2 days. I'm happy to report that I'm still having fun (but I'm really tired).

Simplicity

There is something to be said for simplicity. The first baby shower cake used so many different methods and took forever to make. And it fell. So I took my favorite element and made one simple cake with it. I LOVE it more than any cake I've done so far.

Now I have to go make another for tonight.

wow that sucked

I have been planning for weeks for this baby shower tomorrow. I have gone through several versions of the cake I was going to make. I wanted more of a show piece, only because it was a good opportunity to make a larger cake for my portfolio. I was very excited and worked very hard on it.

I started baking Sunday night and worked all day Monday for the shower Tuesday (tomorrow). I completed it just before we went to Steve's parents for dinner.

I was able to get one picture before my camera battery died.

When we got back from dinner, it was over. The cake just didn't have enough support and got all slouchy and was a complete mess. SOOOO, now I have 1 day to make an entirely new cake, plus another cake for another venue, also tomorrow evening. We're about to see how much I really enjoy this new hobby!

Sunflower Redemption

After the disaster of the flower pot cakes, I was feeling very uninspired for Mothers Day cake ideas. That is, until now. Aaaaahhhhh (in vibrato with lights from heaven).
And I absolutely love how the ladybugs turned out!

Clowning Around

This is my latest 1st birthday cake. The theme of the party was lolipops. You know, the big, colorful, swirly kind. I mostly went with the colors and did my own thing.

If at first you don't succeed...

...then it probably means that your idea was best as just that, an idea. You should leave it alone and move on. Whatever you do, do not waste your time and materials trying it all over again.

I had a great idea. I was going to make a cake that looked like a flower pot and put cake-pop flowers in it and have the cutest Mothers Day cake EVER! It was a no-brainer.

My attempt at a flower pot was an enormous disaster. It looks like a 6th grade art project gone bad.

Being the trooper that I am, I wasn't going to let that stop me. So I tried again. I did a lot better. This could maybe qualify as a 7th grade art project.

Soooo, if all goes as planned, 10 cakes from now and I'll have a wonderful college-grade flower pot.
